Imagine entertaining your guests in the historic ambiance and old world charm of Old Derby Academy – one of Hingham’s most significant historical landmarks.
Old Derby Academy ~ Rental
Note: Old Derby Academy will be closing on August 21, 2015 so that we can commence eagerly-anticipated renovations and the construction of our Hingham Heritage Museum. When we re-open in the fall of 2016, the Old Derby ballroom will be an even better venue for your events. See you then!
Old Derby is available for rent to celebrate weddings, business meetings, and other special occasions. The building is an elegant example of Hingham’s Federal era architecture and sits atop a hill overlooking Hingham Square. A more picturesque setting would be hard to come by.
An upstairs ballroom (handicapped accessible), with an adjacent brick terrace and garden, can accommodate banquets for groups of up to 100. With its arching, oversized windows, and period details, Old Derby adds an air of historic elegance to your special occasion. And your guests will delight in the building’s storied past.
More than 200 years ago, Madame Sarah Derby donated her property to the town for the purpose of building a school for Hingham children. Founded in 1791, Old Derby Academy is the oldest co-educational schoolhouse in the United States. The current building was erected in 1818 to house a growing student population and was procured by the Hingham Historical Society in the 1960s, when the school moved to its current location. Today the ground floor serves as the Society’s visitor center and gift shop.
