The Francis Overton House, 1874
The original front door, decorative woodwork over the front entry and tall narrow windows highlight this home’s Italianate architectural style popular when the home was built in the late 19th century. Francis Overton, born in Hingham, was engaged in several occupations including the manufacture of shoes, fireman on the South Shore Railroad, fishing industry, and last and most notable the manufacture of ice cream. His ice cream factory was located behind this home. He sold his ice cream at his saloon/cafe near Broad Bridge, which connects North and South St in downtown Hingham. The Hingham Journal reports, “Orders for ice cream left at the saloon or at his factory on North Street will receive prompt attention.” The home was the venue for the Overtons’ daughter’s wedding in 1895 and also for their own 50th Anniversary celebration in 1913. The current owners, Margit and Mike Foley, started looking for a house to better accommodate their growing family and purchased the home from the Lewis family in 2016. The home attracted them because it offered space, a private backyard; and it was within walking distance of Hingham Square. During their renovation, they kept the antique charm of the home in the front living room and dining room, while completely removing the old kitchen to make a pantry and a bathroom. They converted a previous three season porch into a modern kitchen and eating area with a large picture window overlooking a rock formation. A side entryway, coat closet and storage bench connects the kitchen to the back of the home and the garage. What was once a private apartment at the back, is now an office, bathroom, and family room. On the second floor, there are two bedrooms, a bathroom, laundry, and a primary bedroom suite that includes a walk-in closet, bathroom, and an inviting fireplace. The attic has a bedroom, bath and a lovely hangout alcove with an additional bed for sleepovers. The five Foleys enjoy their new home appreciating its history while enjoying its modern conveniences.
