The Hingham Historical Society brings history to life through a program of annual and ongoing programs and events which are open to members and the public. There is truly something for everyone.
Lincoln Day
We sponsor the annual 8th Grade Lincoln Day Essay Contest, awarding cash prizes to the top three middle-school essays on famous quotations by Abraham Lincoln.
Annual Meeting
Museum Day
Museum Day is an annual town-wide event that opens the doors of Hingham’s many historic buildings and collections, including the South Shore Model Railroad Club, GAR Hall, Old Ship Church, our own Old Ordinary, and the Bare Cove Fire Museum. Family-friendly activities give Hingham residents a chance to experience our unique history up close.
Fifth Grade Tours
Every spring, the Society hosts the Fifth Grade Tours of the Old Ordinary curriculum studies of colonial life.
Achievement Awards
In June, Achievement Awards are presented to Hingham High school students who have excelled in history and art.
Annual Historic House Tour
The Annual Historic House Tour, held in October, offers a rare glimpse into some of Hingham’s antique homes and attracts hundreds of visitors from all over New England.
Candlelight Tours of the Old Ordinary
In November, the Society hosts Candlelight Tours of the Old Ordinary, which focus on on the hardships of life during long New England winters.
Harvest Dinner
The Harvest Dinner, also in November, celebrates the fall season with an traditional turkey dinner and a guest speaker on topics of historic interest from antiques to presidential politics.
Community Events
Throughout the year, the Society participates in annual downtown Hingham events including Taste of Hingham, the 4th of July Parade, and Artswalk
