Candlelight Tours of Old Ordinary 2024

Dates: November 1, 2, 8, & 9 (Fridays & Saturdays)
Times: 6:30PM, 7:00PM, and 7:30PM Tours Each Night

Join the Hingham Historical Society for its Annual Candlelight tours at the Old Ordinary!

The 1686 Old Ordinary House Museum is located at 21 Lincoln Street in Hingham, MA.

Guests will be able to learn about the hardships and simple pleasures of a New England winter in colonial days. The Old Ordinary dates back to the 17th Century, and has served as both a private home and a stopping place for travelers between Boston and Plymouth.

Unlike the Society’s summer tours of the house, which feature art, furniture, samplers, and toys once owned by Hingham families, the Candlelight Tours focus on what life was like for early New England families during long, cold, dark New England winters.

  • These fun 45-minute tours by battery candles address heat, lighting, domestic chores, and family life in an environment very different from what we enjoy today.
  • Tours end with an appropriate snack.
  • Please be aware that there are stairs to climb, dim lighting and some slanted flooring.
  • There are no physical tickets for the tours. Names will be on a list at check-in and your online confirmation is your receipt.
